An area not included within a parish; outside the parish, for instance those in Association with the Crown, Religious houses (pre-Dissolution), Cathedral Chapter or other corporate bodies; exempt from liability to parish obligations. Also an area outside one's legitimate province (Act of Parliament (1721) in the London Gazette no. 5927/5). From the late 1850's onwards, particularly in 1858, the civil functions were removed either by making the area into a separate Civil Parish or by including it within an adjacent Civil Parish.
